Coastline. Solo Show 2006, Galerie Image, Aarhus. Denmark.
PhotoCairo 3, 2005.
Photographic Installation that consists of 64 prints, 30x40cm, each with an adjacent text.
Coastline is a photographic installation that documents the sequence of entrance gates to the private summerhouses and resorts that have sprung up along the northern coast of Egypt – along the Mediterranean from Agamy to Alamein – mostly since the beginning of the 90’s. The eclectic architectural designs and village/resort names, function as a vehicle for the statement of a desired socioeconomic position, rendered illusory with the knowledge that the gates are often designed by a separate architect to secure sales before the village/resort is complete.
The endless combinations of architectural, aesthetic and linguistic elements indicate a continuous aspiration for a solid and unique identity, which comprises many diverse historical, cultural, religious, social and economic realities. The materialization of each gate illustrates the challenge of creating its unique identity, then respectively, on the highway, the sequence of gates examine the achieved attempts.
